Liverpool won 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur in dramatic circumstances as they went top of the table. Toby Alderweireld scored an own goal in stoppage time which handed the Reds the three points.
Roberto Firmino opened the scoring when he headed in from Andy Robertson’s cross in the first half. Liverpool created chances before the interval but failed to double their lead. Mauricio Pochettino made some tactical adjustments for Spurs in the second half, and they were for the better.
Spurs switched to a four-man defence, and pushed Danny Rose into the winger spot. They started to have more possession, and eventually equalised through Lucas Moura. Mousa Sissoko had a golden chance to give his side the lead but ballooned his effort over.
Liverpool took the lead again when Mohamed Salah’s header was parried into Alderweireld’s path by Hugo Lloris. The Belgian pushed it into his own net to send the Anfield crowd into raptures.
Liverpool are now two points above Manchester City who have a game in hand. “There are 500 ways to win a game; today was slightly ugly. Who cares?” said Jurgen Klopp after the match. “We stay together, we’re all thinking the same thing – how you compete with the best team in the world for one position.”
