Liverpool knocked out by Wolves in FA Cup third round

Premier League leaders Liverpool suffered their second straight defeat of 2019 after crashing out of the FA Cup third round following a 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium.

Raul Jimenez put his side ahead in the 38th minute as Wolves capitalized on an error from James Milner in midfield, and the Mexican forward was let free to finish his one-on-one chance.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp rotated his squad and fielded some of his fringe players, with Divock Origi grabbing his opportunity with both hands, netting the equalizer shortly after the halftime break. However, Liverpool’s lead last only four minutes as a stunning long-range strike from Ruben Neves put Wolves back in the lead.

Klopp brought the likes of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino off the bench but just like their teammates, the opposition defence remained resolute and firm, barely allowing any substantial opening for the duo to create goal scoring opportunities.

Meanwhile, for Wolves, the Premier League new boys claimed their third big scalp in the form of Liverpool last night after wins against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur last December in the league.

The Reds’ dismal record in the FA Cup continues under the leadership of their German manager. Although, this might also turn out to be a blessing for Liverpool as their sole focus and purpose this campaign shifts back to the Premier League and Champions League since they will be able to cope with lesser fixtures and much-needed rest in the long run.
