Messi has always been criticized for not being a proper leader and not winning an international trophy. But that wait is finally over as he has gone on to win much coveted Copa San Juan.
Lionel Messi’s wait for his first international trophy is finally over, at least according to his die hard fans.
The Argentinian captained his side to a victory over Nicaragua to win the Copa San Juan last Saturday. Questions do arise asking what cup is it even or when did such a name really make the limelight. Well that’s right. In reality the cup that is currently being hyped by Messi’s fans is nothing but something equivalent to a pre season trophy.
The most interesting fact from this victory is that the existence of the trophy wasn’t even known until Argentina or even in particular Messi had won it.
The match saw Argentina run riot 5-1 with Lionel Messi grabbing himself a brace. Unlike his fans, who will now add this almost irrelevant trophy to his illustrious trophy cabinet, Messi will not be concerned much about this victory. The game can be nothing but compared to a Copa America warm up game.
The major debate between both Messi and Ronaldo fanboys has been the number of trophies each one has accumulated. While Messi has won a number of trophies at Barcelona, his wait for an international triumph still waits.
Ronaldo on the other hand edges his counterpart in this aspect having won the UEFA Euro in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League last Sunday.
It looks to be seen whether Messi will lay hands on his first international trophy when the Copa America kicks off this week. It is almost a do or die situation for Messi, who happens to be nearing his final few major tournaments with his international side.
Failure to win the Copa America will mean that Messi will have to wait till 2020 for his much awaited international trophy.
