Defending Spanish champions FC Barcelona slumped to a a 2-1 loss to lowly Leganes yesterday courtesy of goals from Nabil El Zhar and Oscar Rodriguez in the second half. This loss came as a shock to the entire footballing world but this was not the first time that Leganes had shocked one of the ‘big boys’ of La Liga.

Phillipe Coutinho gave Barcelona the lead in the 12th minute with an attempt deserving of a Puskas nomination, a venomous volley that flew right into the bottom corner of the Leganes goal. Barcelona dominated the first half after a demoralised Leganes tried to keep them at bay, creating several opportunities but failing to convert them into goals.

The second half saw something almost entirely different as Leganes took it to Barcelona and scored twice in two minutes to take the lead. The first was a point blank header from Nabil El Zhar in the 52nd minute that levelled the game up, followed by a powerful strike by Real Madrid loanee Oscar Rodriguez in the 53rd minute that gave Leganes the victory.

Despite having 78% possession, it was Leganes that had more shots and shots on target in the match, while the only other stat where Barca were ahead was offsides, with 5 compared to Leganes’ 1. It just wasn’t meant to be for the Catalans.
