Lakshya Sen breezes to second round of Denmark Open

Lakshya Sen continued his blazing ascension into the top-tier of the world badminton scene with a victory over his first-round opponent at Denmark Open.

Lakshya defeated opponent Christian Popov in straight games to breeze into the second round of the tournament.

The 19 year old shuttler has been on a steady ascension since his breakout year in 2019 where he won multiple trophies. Here, Popov was no match for him. In the end, the score was 21-9, 21-15.

In the first set, Lakshya and Popov played competively till the score was 10-8. Then the Indian went on to win 11 and concede only 1 as his opponent was helpless. The next set was way more competitive but the young Indian found a way to get to a decisive win.

In the second round, Lakshya’s opponent shall be the winner of the match between Danish Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus and Belgian Maxime Moreels.

“I moved quite well, that was the key. In the second game he had a lead but I had made a few mistakes. I was able to cut down on them and find my rhythm,” said Lakshya.

“I’m very happy to be playing again after seven months and it felt very normal on court,” said the shuttler.

Sen, born in Almora, belongs to a badminton family. His father, D. K. Sen, is a coach in and his brother, Chirag, is also an international badminton player.

He showed his talent at a young age talent and had a brilliant year in the junior badminton circuit in 2016, leading to him becoming the number one junior singles player in BWF World Junior ranking in February, 2017.

Sen participated at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics as the fourth seeded. He settled for boys’ singles Silver medal after losing to Chinese shuttler Li Shifeng in straight games 15–21, 19–21.

In his breakout year in 2019, he won five titles: three of them were BWF International Series (Bangladesh International, Scottish Open and Belgian International) and two were BWF World Tour trophies (SaarLorLux Open and Dutch Open).
