“Could have got any batsman”: Kyle Jamieson on the inswinger that trapped Virat Kohli

Day 3 of the World Test Championship Final saw more action with the weather gods dishing out mercy for the better part of the day. A pivotal moment in the day occurred when Kyle Jamieson dismissed his franchise skipper Virat Kohli with a delivery that came back sharply.

The wicket broke the well-built partnership between Virat Kohli and deputy Ajinkya Rahane for the fourth wicket.

Kohli was well-set at 44 and looked in command during his stay at the crease against the pace battery.

The rookie pacer used his high release point to good effect and got the ball to jag back in trap the Indian skipper right in front. Kohli proceeded to review, but it was in vain with the three reds sealing his departure from the crease.

That dismissal triggered a collapse as India went from 149-3 to 217 all out midway through the day.

Following the end of day’s play, Jamieson was asked if the random inswinger out of the blue was part of a plan used to set up Kohli.

In reply, the all-rounder admitted that the inswinger would have been tough to negotiate irrespective of the stature of the batsman.

“Oh, I guess, yeah, maybe there’s some sort of pattern. I don’t necessarily know if we talk about it a huge amount,”

“I think the one that I was able to get with him today certainly seamed back a little bit, and those are pretty hard to control as a bowler and pretty hard to manage as a batter no matter who you are, so I don’t think it’s necessarily just for him.” Jamieson said

New Zealand comfortably dealt with the opening burst by the Indian pacers and built a solid first-innings stand with patience.

It took 34.2 overs for India to make a breakthrough and rather than the pacers, it was Ravichandran Ashwin who snatched the wicket.

The Kiwis are well poised at 101-2 and trail by 116 runs in the first innings. India ended the day on a high with the wicket of Devon Conway, but bad light stopped play soon after.

“Well, not really. I think he’s a world-class batter, and those guys don’t tend to have too many chinks in their armour. Certainly pleasing to get him. Like I said before, he’s obviously a massive part of their lineup, and to get him early certainly set things up nicely for us.

Just was pleasing in terms of for myself being able to try to wobble the ball and try and keep him in check a little bit and to get that wicket was pleasing and just a great start for our game,” Jamieson added
