Prithvi Shaw slammed a half-century to guide Delhi Capitals to a 7-wicket win over the struggling Kolkata Knight Riders. In the process, he also became only the second player in IPL history to dispatch all the legal deliveries for fours in an over.
Chasing a below-par target of 155, Shaw set the tone to the chase in the dew-filled Ahmedabad outfield by smashing his U-19 teammate Shivam Mavi for 24 runs in the first over.
The pacer was handed the new ball instead of Pat Cummins on the bank of a superb outing against Punjab Kings, where he bowled four overs on the trot with a dot ball percentage of over 60.
The former U-19 skipper took advantage of the start and romped to an 18-ball fifty, the fastest of this edition so far. He eventually perished in the 16th over for a well-made 82.
Following the monumental win, Shaw was asked about his aggressive approach. The opener claimed that he was waiting for the loose deliveries and having played with Shivam Mavi, he knew where he was going to bowl.
“Wasn’t thinking anything, to be honest. Was just waiting for the loose balls. We’ve played for four-five years now (with Mavi), so I knew where he will bowl to me,” Shaw said during the post-match presentation.
Shaw also added that after a slew of half-volleys in the slot, he was anticipating a short ball.
“The first four-five balls he bowled were half-vollies so I was prepared for the short ball but unfortunately he didn’t bowl,” he added
The young promising batsman also revealed his desire to have a conversation with Virender Sehwag, given their similar aggressive styles of batting. Moreover, he also attributed his father’s advice to the rich vein of form he is currently in following the Australian tour.
“No, we haven’t spoken yet (with Sehwag) but if I chance I’d like to because he’s the one who likes to score off the first ball. My dad has supported very well. After getting back from Australia, I wasn’t happy with myself. My dad just asked me to play my natural game,” Shaw concluded
Delhi Capitals bounced back from their narrow defeat against RCB in style and have entered the second half of the competition with 5 wins and 2 defeats.
