Spain’s badminton star, Carolina Marin, faced a devastating moment during the women’s singles semifinal. Leading her match against China’s He Bing Jiao, Marin suffered a right knee injury that forced her to withdraw from the tournament. Marin, the Olympic champion from Rio 2016, had re-injured herself in this crucial semifinal match.
Heartbreak for Carolina Marin
Marin convincingly won the first game with a score of 21-14 and was well on her way to the gold-medal match. Tragically, she landed awkwardly on her surgically repaired knee during the second game, screaming in pain. The arena fell silent as her team rushed to her aid.
Despite the agony, Marin attempted to continue. She put on a brace and stepped back onto the court, but her knee hindered her movements. After just two points, she knew her Olympics were over. Marin dropped to both knees, weeping uncontrollably, pounding the court in frustration.
Heart of a great champion, Carolina Marin 🇪🇸 chose to walk out of the #Olympics court on her own terms and refused the wheelchair.
