IPL 2021: KKR captain Morgan wants talent in the squad to step up with performances

Kolkata Knight Riders endured their fifth loss of this edition after a tame display against Delhi Capitals. The two-time champions could only muster a below-par total which was scaled down with ease by the in-form DC batsmen. KKR skipper Eoin Morgan lamented his side’s inability to excel well with both bat and ball in the same game.

After being put in to bat first, KKR got off to a lethargic start in the powerplay. While the top order failed to convert their bare starts, the middle order collapsed without any resistance.

It took a mammoth effort by Andre Russell to steer KKR past the 150-run mark after being 82-5 at one stage.

During the post-match presentation, Eoin Morgan, who departed for a duck in the first innings, expressed his disappointment with the overall display by the team.

“Yeah, very disappointed. We were quite slow off the blocks, and lost wickets in the middle. Andre got us to 150, but we were slow with the ball again, Throughout the tournament so far we’ve struggled to combine batting and bowling in one match.” said Morgan after the 7-wicket loss.

Any of KKR’s hopes to defend the total was diminished right away after Prithvi Shaw scored Shivam Mavi for six boundaries on the trot in the first over.

The KKR skipper was asked why the youngster was given the new ball, despite the presence of Pat Cummins in the squad.

“Cummins has been bowled earlier with the new ball, Mavi bowled four on the trot last game and bowled well. Moving forward, we need our big-name players to get into the action,” Morgan explained

To conclude, he admitted the talent present in the pool of players but wants the talent to turn into performances.

“You need to be honest and realistic. Otherwise, you are doing a disservice to the guys in the change room. Hopefully, we can turn things around. We have a huge amount of talent in the squad, but talent only gets you so far. You need to turn it into performance, which we haven’t done.”

After enduring a four-game losing streak across Chennai and Mumbai, KKR had begun their quest in Ahmedabad on a promising note. However, with a crushing loss that affects their net run rate as well, KKR will have to consider making some changes in personnel and batting order heading into the second half of the competition.

The side will next face the high-flying Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.
