Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju encounters close call with Covid-19

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju is fresh off a Covid-19 scare. This happened as Rijiju was visiting the Karni Singh Shooting Range (KSSR).

Source such as The Times of India report that Rijiju, and Sports Authority of India (SAI) director general Sandip Pradhan met a regional director, who later tested positive for Covid-19, although he remained asymptomatic. The official admitted himself to Batra Hospital where he remains in quarantine.

The official wishes to remain seven days in the hospital, as it is mandatory and then spend the seven remaining days in a Covid care hotel. His family members have tested for the virus with negative results.

While the concerned official was in close proximity to Rijiju during his visit two days ago, it has not been known if he ever came in direct contact with the minister at some point during the visit.

During the same visit, Rijiju assured shooters living away from KSSR that ammunition will be provided to them to facilitate their training.

““It is important that athletes, especially 2024 and 2028 Olympic probables get a chance to continue their training wherever they are in the country. They may not be able to visit KSSR or other academies owing to the Covid 19 situation,” he said.

However, many of them practice in their home range as well as in facilities near their homes. We want to ensure that their training is in no way compromised because of lack of availability of ammunition,” Rijiju added.

“Athletes can collect whatever they need from KSSR and other accredited academies and continue their sporting activities,” he concluded.

Kiren Rijiju, who is also a Minister Of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was a talented athlete during his school days, and enjoyed playing cricket and Badminton, amongst other sports.

As the Sports Minister, he has been highly active, amongst his steps include the facilitation of retired Boxer Dingko Singh’s treatment during the pandemic situation.
