SRIKANTH RECALLS THE TIME HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

The former world number 1 had only started his path to the top after a number of disappointing years, but his momentum was unfortunately cut short by the virus causing the worldwide pandemic.

Srikanth felt frustrated but he understood he had no control over a disease. He wanted to play the events in India, where he believed he could end up winning, but had to withdraw. Srikanth suffered from mild symptoms and restarted training once he tested negative.

“I had mild symptoms. I was in isolation for around 10 days. Fortunately, I recovered quickly and once the test came negative, I started training immediately,” he commented.”

SRIKANTH WANTS TO FOCUS ON RETAINING GOLD AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The 29-year-old, who received the Arjuna Award in 2015, has multiple tournaments to focus on. He will start his season with the German Open Super 300, then move on to the All England Championship, and finally participate in the Swiss Open Super 300. However, his eyes are on the Commonwealth Games, where he is the defending champion.

While he wants to retain his CWG gold, he also wishes to perform to the best of his capabilities in the Asian Games and World Championships. Incidentally, he is the first Indian to reach a World Championship men’s singles final.

“The Commonwealth Games is very important for me as I am the defending champion. Asian Games is also important and in between, there is the World Championship,” the shuttler commented.

THE FORMER WORLD NUMBER 1 IS HAPPY WITH HIS PROGRESS

Srikanth currently ranks number 11 in the world and is happy with his progress. Younger players such as Lee Zii Jia have enhanced the competition, but Srikanth only contemplates his own gameplay and tries to get better with every game.
