The 37-year-old Irishman has now decided to ‘step down’ from ODI after his career spanned for fifteen long years. He is considered as one of the greatest Irish cricketers to step foot on the pitch and now he is set to quit the ODI format.

Cricket Ireland released a statement in which O’Brien reflected on his career and explained his retirement. He said this was the right decision for him after playing 153 ODI matches for his nation.

He said: “After 15 years playing for Ireland, I feel now is the right time to step away and retire from ODI cricket. It has been an honour and a privilege to represent my country 153 times and the memories I take from them will last a lifetime.”

A look at Kevin O’Brien’s spectacular career

Kevin O’Brien had made his International debut in 2006 in Ireland’s inaugural match against England. He has created some memorable moments on the pitch which will remain imprinted on the memory of fans.

He had smashed a record-breaking 113 runs in the 2011 World Cup against England at Bangalore. He had scored 50-ball blistering century which is still the fastest ever in a World Cup.

He is Ireland’s third-highest run-scorer in the format tallying a total of 3,618 runs and also their leading wicket-taker with 114 dismissals. He also finished his career with 68 catches, the most by an Irishman in the mentioned format.

He said: “I’ve had some unbelievable moments with the team since 2006 – the three World Cups, the personal successes and spending time travelling and playing all over the world, but I will now shift my focus and remain fully committed to T20 cricket – with two world cups in the next 18 months – and hoping to add to my three caps in Test cricket.”

O’Brien is eyeing to make his way into Ireland’s squad for the T20 World Cup and also adding to his three Test caps.
