The World-Cup winning Indian skipper Kapil Dev recently opened up on Indian women’s team bowler Deepti Sharma, who dismissed England’s Charlotte Dean at the non-striker’s end in India’s 16-run victory to whitewash the Brits. Deepti Sharma’s actions on the pitch left the fans and pundits in a split. While, she was praised for incredible game-awareness, she also received criticism from some for the way she dismissed Charlotte Dean. Previously, R. Ashwin had also commented on the matter. Now, Kapil Dev has backed the Indian bowler.

England were 118/9 in the 170-run chase when Dean, alongside Freya Davis, showed a fightback for the hosts. The duo had stitched a 35-run stand when Deepti, in the 44th over of the innings, ran Dean out during the delivery stride.

The dismissal, more commonly – and informally – known as ‘Mankad’ among the cricket fraternity, was recently moved from ‘Unfair Play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and the International Cricket Council also legalized the mode of dismissal soon after.

Kapil Dev, who back in 1992 had made a similar dismissal of then South Africa batter Peter Kirsten, took to Instagram to give a blunt take on the topic before offering a solution. He wrote:

“In a situation like this, I feel instead of intense debates every time – there should be a simple rule. Deprive the batsmen of their run. It should be deemed a short run. It’s a better solution in my mind.”

Earlier on Monday, Deepti lifted the lid on the entire ‘Spirit of Cricket’ debate as she revealed that Dean was warned several times before the dismissal and the umpire was also made aware of it.

“It was a part of our plan because we had warned her and she was doing it again and again. Whatever we did was as per the rules. We had also told the umpire about it,” Sharma told reporters after arriving in India.

The win ensured a 3-0 series clean sweep for India against England, as India’s bowling stalwart Jhulan Goswami received a perfect farewell. Goswami took two wickets in her final international appearance, registering impressive figures of 2/30 in 10 overs.
