Kagiso Rabada compares bio-bubble life to living in ‘luxury prisons’

Speedster Kagiso Rabada has recently revealed that they have started their training in two groups to reduce the risk of global pandemic novel COVID-19 prior to their series against England. Since they have assembled last week, two members of the squad have already been tested positive and two other players had been in the isolation because of their close contact with one of the infected players as well.

“It’s been quite bizarre,” Rabada told an online press conference from the team hotel in Cape Town. “We have to train in groups -– a group of non-contacts and a group of close contacts. It doesn’t mean anyone is positive but we have to take that extra precaution.”

Although Rabada did not share how many players have been placed in each group, he said that scheduled intra-squad matches on Saturday and Monday were already cancelled, likely to reduce the risk of infections as well. He also said that more Covid tests would be conducted with the players as soon as possible.

However, the pace bowler said that the training has been going smoothly ahead of the first Twenty20 International against England at Newlands on Friday. And, he also revealed that the team has been sticking to strict rules too. Meanwhile, he is going to e placed his second “bio-bubble” post-IPL 2020 where he played for the Delhi Capitals and emerged as the leading wicket-taker, in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League in the United Arab Emirates.

“The competitiveness was second to none. The crowd gives that extra bit of adrenalin and that extra bit of drama and theatre. There’s definitely an element missing but at the end of the day we are competitive cricketers who want to compete, to test your skill level. I think it will be much the same in this series,” he added.

Rabada further said that living in the bubble was tough but he also referred to it as “luxury prisons.”

“It’s like luxury prisons that you are in but at the end of the day you have to remind yourself that you are fortunate,” he said. “People have lost their jobs and people are struggling. I try to remind myself that we must be grateful for the opportunity to earn some money and do what we love.”
