India opened their medal tally in a grand style at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran as Jyothi Yarraji and Harmilan Bains secured individual gold medals in the 1st session on Day 1. Jyothi clocked her new personal best, subsequently a new national record, in the women’s 60m hurdles to clinch the gold medal while starting on lane 4.
With the two gold medals, India has already surpassed their gold medal tally from last year, when Tajinderpal Singh Toor won the sole gold medal in Astana. In total, a 15-member Indian contingent will compete at the three-day event Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024.
Harmilans Bains and Jyothi Yarraji open India’s medal tally
Harmilan Bains was the first to open India’s account as she clocked 4:29.55 seconds in the women’s 1500m final.
On the other hand, Jyothi Yarraji set a new record at 8.12 seconds as she eclipsed her previous best of 8.13 seconds which came in the previous edition of AIAC in Astana.
In the all-women morning session, the other two Indians Shaili Singh and Nayana James finished fifth(6.27m) and sixth(6.23m) respectively in the long jump event.
India will be hoping for more medals in the evening session with the reigning Asian Champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor competing in the men’s shot put final. Apart from him, Ashok Kumar Saroj (1500m final) and youngster Tejas Shirse (60m hurdles heat) will also compete for medals.
