Jwala Gutta takes a veiled shot at Saina Nehwal for joining BJP – and the fans aren’t having it!

Indian badminton icon and former World No. 1 Saina Nehwal officially joined Bharatiya Janata Party, along with Chandranshu Nehwal this Wednesday. While there are discussion and difference of opinions on Saina’s decision to enter the political scene of India, fellow badminton ace Jwala Gutta, who is renowned for being vocal on various topics, has taken a jab at her compatriot for her decision. However, the fans fired back.

After Saina Nehwal’s news of joining BJP was on air, Jwala Gutta took it to social media to express her opinion on the matter, which was a dig at the Padma Bhushan awardee.

On her official Twitter handle, the 36 year old wrote her say on the matter, which translates to: “Hearing it for the first time…started playing without any reason and now joined party without any reason.”

However, the tweet wasn’t well received by the supporters. While some of Gutta’s own fans were on positive terms with her statement, the crowd of twitterati crowd drew comparison on both the players’ achievements in the sport, while reminding Gutta about Saina’s number of medals won.

A couple of hours later, the shuttler made another tweet, but this time her conduct was different. She wrote: @NSaina congratulations on joining the party…I hope and wish that u do something big for women and women sports in our country…YES it’s difficult but am sure u can bring a lot of CHANGE!! Good luck 🙂

Yesterday, Nehwal was present at the BJP national headquarters in New Delhi for the formal joining ceremony. Following her meetup with the saffron party president J.P. Nadda, Nehwal praised the Honourable Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

“I am a hard-working person and like hard-working people. [Prime Minister] Narendra Modi sir has been working day and night for the country. If I can do something for the country with him, it will be my good fortune. I draw a lot of inspiration from Modi sir. He inspires me.”

She also addressed the “Khelo India” initiative by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. “She is an inspirational figure,” BJP general secretary Arun Singh said at the event.
