England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow is on the brink of a significant milestone in his cricketing career, earning his 100th Test cap in the fifth test at Dharmshala. However, this achievement is not just about his journey on the cricket field; but also a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Janet Bairstow, a two-time cancer survivor.
Jonny Bairstow’s cricketing journey has been one of resilience and determination, mirroring his mother’s brave battle against cancer. Janet Bairstow, a former cricketer herself, has been a pillar of strength for her family, facing life’s adversities with courage and grace. Her fight against cancer, not once but twice, has been an inspiration for Jonny, shaping his approach towards his game and life.
Jonny Bairstow speaks about his mother’s role in his life
Speaking ahead of the momentous occasion of his 100th Test, the 34-year-old thus dedicated to his mother, a testament to her indomitable spirit. “This one’s for you, Mum,” he said, with eyes gleaming with pride and gratitude.
“When I play, there are times I think about Dad. But I think more about how hard Mum worked to make sure we were OK after everything that happened. To keep us together as a family. That has been my driving force. My mum is the embodiment of strength. There was a determination there. She worked three jobs and had two kids that were under 10 at a difficult time. She was taking me to Leeds United (where he played youth football), to Headingley, all sorts of other places,” Bairstow said.
“It’s paying all that back, making sure they are OK, creating a life for my own family as well. She had cancer twice. She’s a bloody strong woman, to get through that twice before you even consider anything else she’s been through, and it shows the strength and determination of the woman,” he added.
The cricketing fraternity and fans worldwide lauded Bairstow’s touching gesture, acknowledging the profound impact that personal battles and victories can have on a sportsperson’s career.
Bairstow’s journey to his 100th Test has been marked by numerous highs and lows. From making his debut in 2011 to becoming one of England’s most reliable batsmen, Bairstow’s career has been a roller-coaster ride. His aggressive batting style, coupled with his skills behind the stumps, has made him a vital part of the English cricket team.
However, like his mother’s battle with cancer, Bairstow’s journey has not been easy. He has faced criticism, battled injuries, and dealt with the pressure of international cricket. But, much like his mother, Bairstow has faced these challenges head-on, emerging stronger with each hurdle.
The dedication of Jonny Bairstow’s 100th Test cap to his mother is a beautiful full-circle moment, linking his personal and professional life. It highlights the significant role that Janet has played in Bairstow’s life, not just as a mother but also as a mentor and inspiration.
In conclusion, Jonny Bairstow’s 100th Test cap is not just a personal milestone but a symbol of human resilience and determination. It is a tribute to his mother, Janet, whose courage and strength have been instrumental in shaping Bairstow’s successful cricketing career. This dedication serves as a reminder that our personal lives and struggles often shape our professional achievements, making the victory even sweeter.
