Off-spinner Dom Bess has come into play post the lunch break with the wickets of skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, the latter courtesy of a stunning grab by Joe Root.

After batting for over two days, England piled up 578 runs on the board in the first innings. Much like their bowlers, the Indian batsmen are not having a merry time back in their home soil with the wickets tumbling at an alarming rate.

Jofra Archer, with his menacing pace, dismissed Rohit Sharma for just 6. Fellow opener, Shubman Gill looked in fine touch on his home debut, but played a reckless shot straight to mid-on after a decent start of 29 off 28.

The seasoned duo of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara dragged the team to lunch, but both were back into the pavilion in a matter of overs. Ollie Pope took a sharp catch at forward short leg to dismiss the captain while it took an extraordinary effort at short cover to remove Ajinkya Rahane.

Bess bowled a loose harmless full toss outside off stump, to which Rahane latched on with an uppish full-bloodied drive. Root, dove full length and grabbed the catch with his weaker left hand to send the vice-captain for just 1. Watch the video of the dismissal right below:

Rishabh Pant now joins Cheteshwar Pujara with England looking to capitalise on the slight change in the pitch and India’s despair. India need 378 runs to avoid the follow-on with this current partnership arguably holding the key.
