ICC released the updated Test Rankings after the completion of the third test between India and England. English Skipper Joe Root, who is in the form of his life, has become the new no. 1 batsman in ICC Rankings. Root overtook Kane Williamson, who reached the pinnacle early this year after scoring heaps of runs against the West Indies and Pakistan.

Root reclaimed the top position after nearly six years. Root was last at the number one position in December 2015 before being overtaken by Smith. The 30-year-old has scored over 500 runs in the series so far. This includes 3 hundreds and a fifty.

Root is now only one point below his career-best aggregate of 917 rating points, which he achieved in August 2015 after his innings of 130 against Australia in Nottingham. Only four other England batters have achieved more rating points – Len Hutton, Jack Hobbs, Peter May and Denis Compton.

Rohit Sharma

On the other hand, India’s white-ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma has reached his career-best Test ranking. Also, Rohit Sharma has overtaken captain Virat Kohli to become the top-ranked Test batter from his country. With scores of 19 and 59 in the third test, Rohit jumped to the fifth position in the ICC Test rankings. Cheteshwar Pujara was the previous Indian player who was ranked higher than Kohli. Pujara was the no.2 batsman in ICC rankings in November 2017 and Kohli was fifth.

AB de Villiers was the last batsman apart from Kohli, Smith, Root and Williamson, to reach no. 1 position in Tests

The Fab Four, which consists of Joe Root, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, and Virat Kohli have dominated the number one position in Test cricket for nearly 6 six years. The last time someone apart from these four was at the top was South Africa’s AB de Villiers in November 2015.

Speaking of bowlers, India’s ace spinner R Ashwin has maintained his no.2 position despite playing any games. Jasprit Bumrah is the other Indian in the top ten rankings at tenth position. The veteran pacer James Anderson is in fifth place. Australian speedster Pat Cummins has maintained his number one position in Tests.
