The iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata is set to honour Jhulan Goswami, one of India’s most celebrated female cricketers, by renaming the Block B gallery in her name. This tribute will be officially unveiled on January 22, 2025, during the India men’s team’s T20I match against England.
A Tribute to Jhulan Goswami’s Career
- Historic Recognition: Jhulan Goswami will be the first Indian woman and the third cricketer overall to have a stand named after her at Eden Gardens. The other stands are named after former India captain Sourav Ganguly, former international Pankaj Roy, and former BCCI presidents Jagmohan Dalmiya and Biswanath Dutt.
- Goswami’s Legacy: Over her illustrious 20-year career, Goswami featured in 12 Tests, 204 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, claiming a total of 355 wickets across formats. She holds the record for the most wickets in women’s ODI cricket with 255 dismissals.
- Post-Retirement Contributions: Even after retiring, Goswami has continued to contribute to the sport as a mentor for Bengal’s senior women’s team and as a bowling coach for the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League.
This recognition is a fitting tribute to Goswami’s remarkable contributions to Indian cricket and her role in inspiring future generations of female cricketers. Her name on the stand at Eden Gardens will serve as a lasting reminder of her impact on the sport.
