In a thrilling display of resilience and skill, India’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth clinched the men’s doubles title at the Hangzhou Open 2024. This victory marks their first ATP Tour title as a pair, a significant milestone in their careers.

The Indian duo faced a formidable challenge in the final, going up against Germany’s Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens. The match, held at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre, was a rollercoaster of emotions, showcasing the tenacity and determination of both teams.

Frantzen and Jebens initially took control, winning the first set 6-4. However, Jeevan and Vijay fought back, taking the second set in a nail-biting tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). The match culminated in a super tiebreaker, where the Indian pair triumphed 10-7, sealing their victory after one hour and 49 minutes.

A Season of Comebacks

Jeevan and Vijay’s journey to the title was marked by a series of remarkable comebacks. In the semifinals, they faced Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and the USA’s Robert Galloway. After losing the first set 0-6, they rallied to win the second set and the subsequent tiebreaker. Their quarterfinal match against the second-seeded British team of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool was equally dramatic, with Jeevan and Vijay winning 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 10-8.

The Final Showdown at Hangzhou Open

Frantzen and Jebens broke Jeevan and Vijay’s serve in the fifth game of the first set and held their own serves to take the set. However, the Indian pair held their nerves in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker, which they won. The super tiebreaker saw Jeevan and Vijay initially trailing but they managed to turn the tide, winning six of the last eight points to clinch the title.

For Jeevan, aged 35, this victory is particularly sweet as it marks his second ATP title, the first being the 2017 Chennai Open with Rohan Bopanna. For 37-year-old Vijay, this is his maiden ATP title, making the win even more special. The duo’s success at the Hangzhou Open is a testament to their hard work, perseverance, and excellent teamwork.
