Jay Shah has officially taken over as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1, 2024. At the age of 36, he is the youngest person to ever hold this position.

Shah began his cricket administration career in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he played a key role in developing the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, he became the youngest-ever Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

Before his appointment as ICC Chairman, Shah served as the President of the Asian Cricket Council and Chair of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee.

Challenges Ahead of Jay Shah

Shah aims to expand cricket’s global reach, with a particular focus on the sport’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. He also plans to accelerate the growth of women’s cricket and make the sport more inclusive and engaging for fans worldwide.

Challenges: One of the immediate challenges Shah faces is resolving the ongoing dispute regarding the venue for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan. The BCCI has refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan, and a hybrid model is being considered.

Shah thanked his predecessor, Greg Barclay, for his leadership and the milestones achieved during his tenure. Shah’s extensive experience in cricket administration and his vision for the future of the sport are expected to bring significant changes to the ICC and global cricket.
