In a significant development for cricket enthusiasts worldwide, Jay Shah, the incumbent Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is poised to succeed Greg Barclay as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chair. This transition is expected to take place in December.

Jay Shah’s route to the position of ICC Chairman

Greg Barclay, the current ICC Chair, confirmed that he will not seek a third term and will step down from his post at the end of November. His decision paved the way for Jay Shah’s elevation.

Jay Shah, the son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, has been a powerful figure in cricket. His tenure as BCCI General Secretary witnessed India’s continued dominance in the sport. He currently serves as the BCCI-appointed ICC director and chairs the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee, a highly influential arm of the organization.

At just 35 years old, Jay Shah is set to become the youngest-ever ICC chief. His youthfulness and dynamism are expected to bring fresh perspectives to the global cricket governing body.

With the BCCI’s strong backing, Shah’s unanimous election as the ICC chief seems likely. He will join the esteemed ranks of Indian cricket administrators who have chaired the ICC, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.

Each of the 16 current ICC directors will file nominations for Barclay’s successor by August 27. If multiple nominations arise, an election will be held in November, with the new Chair assuming office on December 1.
