Jasprit Bumrah will have the opportunity to etch his name in cricket history as he targets multiple records held by the legendary Kapil Dev during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Bumrah, who has been in phenomenal form throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, is on the verge of becoming the fastest Indian fast bowler to reach 200 Test wickets. Currently, he has 194 wickets from 43 Tests, needing just six more to achieve this milestone.
Milestones lie ahead for Jasprit Bumrah
Kapil Dev set the record in 50 Tests, achieving the landmark during a match against the West Indies in March 1983. If Bumrah reaches 200 wickets in the Melbourne Test, he will join Ravindra Jadeja as the joint second-fastest Indian to this milestone, with Ravi Ashwin holding the record at 37 Tests.
Additionally, Bumrah is five wickets away from setting the record for the most wickets by an Indian fast bowler in an away Test series. Kapil Dev holds this record with 25 wickets from five Tests during the 1991-92 tour of Australia. Bumrah has already taken 21 wickets from three Tests in the current series, showcasing his exceptional skill and consistency.
Bumrah’s recent performances have been nothing short of extraordinary, including a Player of the Match award in the Perth Test where he took eight wickets, including a five-wicket haul. His ability to swing the ball and extract bounce from any surface has troubled even the best of batsmen.
As India heads into the Boxing Day Test with the series tied at 1-1, all eyes will be on Bumrah to see if he can surpass Kapil Dev’s records and lead India to victory. His success in Melbourne will not only solidify his place among India’s cricketing greats but also inspire future generations of fast bowlers.
