Shreyas Iyer or Suryakumar Yadav? : Aakash Chopra makes his choice for India’s No.4 slot

Team India have penciled down the pool of players for the upcoming T20 World Cup, but they are far from determining the team combination and the personnel. Several spots in the playing eleven are up for grabs, including the crucial No.4 position as well. Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and more will battle for the place over the course of the next few months.

Shreays Iyer or Suryakumar Yadav? : Aakash Chopra makes his choice for India's No.4 slot

Former India batsman analyzed the current options India have for the middle-order spot and handed his vote for Shreyas Iyer. The Delhi Capitals skipper is currently recovering from a shoulder injury, and is expected to feature in the remaining half of the IPL.

Chopra believes that if Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul open during the tournament, the only position to be debated upon is one at number four.

“If Rahul and Rohit open and Kohli plays at No.3, you play Hardik and Rishabh Pant at No.5 or No.6 or the other way around, then you have got Ravindra Jadeja followed by Washington Sundar. So, only one slot is left and that is No.4. So Shreyas or Suryakumar at No.4, it is a tough call,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel

He admitted that the contest is close between Iyer and Yadav for the place, but he ultimately titled in favour of the former due to his experience.

“You will tilt towards Shreyas Iyer only because he has the greater experience, he has already performed well in the ODI team and is also the captain of his team. If he does well in the IPL, you might just go with him, to begin with.

It’s a lovely dilemma. I can’t pick a player at this point because both are good and have the ability to play better than run-a-ball and have the requisite experience of T20 cricket. So maybe just go by current form,” added Chopra.

Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav were both a part of the Indian team that took on England in a five-match T20 series at home. Both of the players managed to impress with the limited chances they got. Iyer’s series was cut short due to the shoulder injury he sustained while fielding.

It is arguably too early to make a call given that the players will have plenty of exposure to T20 cricket before the tournament. Given the fact that Suryakumar Yadav is part of the Sri Lankan tour while Iyer is coming back from a serious injury, might change things till the time the event unfolds.

Team India currently have a lot of talent on their hands which has been justified by the strength of the second-string team.
