Indian table tennis icon Manika Batra had her campaign at the 2023 ITTF World Championships ending in round three after losing to Adriana Diaz on Wednesday in Durban, South Africa.
Manika, ranked 39th in the world, had a seven game thriller against Diaz in their women’s singles outing, where the world rank 13 paddler Puerto Rican prevailed with a victory, handing the Indian a 6-11, 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-3 loss.
Manika suffered her second setback of the day in the women’s doubles category as well, with she and her partner Archana Kamath going down 8-11, 6-11, 7-11 to the Japanese pair of Hina Hayata and Mima Ito in the pre-quarterfinals.
Wednesday also saw the exit of Sharath Kamal and G. Sathiyan from the men’s doubles campaign, as the Indian duo lost to Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford of England by a 9-11, 11-8, 14-12, 12-10 margin.
With the losses in women’s singles, women’s doubles and men’s doubles, India’s campaign at the tournament came to an end.
