Italian Professional cyclist turns delivery boy in order to maintain fitness during lockdown

In an effort to maintain fitness during the Covid-19 pandemic which has affected the entire world: with great harm to Italy, cyclist Umberto Marengo has decided to turn into a deliveryman. With races such as Giro D’Italio postponed or cancelled, delivering food items all over Turin (home to Torino and Juventus) is the only way he could think of to retain his fitness.

Marengo isn’t a widely popular cyclist. He is a member of a relatively unknown KTM riders team who were lucky to qualify for the Giro D’Italio, one of the three biggest tours of the cycling world. Unfortunately, the onset of the pandemic meant the tour had to be postponed from its scheduled start at May 9.

Sitting at home with his girlfriend, Marengo’s mind lit up when speaking about icecream delivery, and he decided to take the only way to keep cycling amidst the lockdown in Italy, where Covid-19 has spread a killing spree of 26000 and beyond.

“We searched the internet and found this ice cream parlour making home deliveries. So I began to wonder if I couldn’t find some people who needed someone to make their deliveries for them,” Marengo said.

The customers are amazed at a cyclist’s unputdownable wish to retain fitness. “The customers are all amazed. Especially since I always try to go up by the stairs to stay that little bit fitter,” Marengo admitted.

The cyclist is delivering a lot of food items. He has managed to set a personal lockdown record of cycling 70 Kilometres in a single day.

Marengo knows that the exercise is not really useful for his cycling skills, and he will need to cover a lot of grounds when the nation eases up the lockdown.

“This really has nothing to do with normal training, even if I try to make every delivery as quickly as possible,” the cyclist admitted, “This is mainly to stay useful to my community.”
