The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President, PT Usha, has been at the forefront of ensuring robust support for the Indian contingent heading to the Paris Olympics 2024. Despite her tireless efforts, she finds herself facing criticism.

PT Usha’s commitment to Indian Contingent for Paris Olympics

Usha praises the remarkable collaboration between the sports ministry, IOA, and national federations. This joint effort guarantees that athletes bound for Paris receive the support staff they prefer. She emphasizes the importance of this synergy, which ensures that athletes have the right team behind them.

Usha’s vision is centered on athletes. Instead of the usual 3:1 ratio between athletes and support staff, they’ve worked hard to achieve a better than 1:1 ratio. A substantial contingent of 68 coaches and 50 support staff members will travel alongside the 117 athletes representing India.

“At IOA, we have embarked on an era when athletes are at the centre of our planning and preparations. Instead of the usual 3:1 ratio between athletes and support staff, we have worked hard to change it to slightly better than 1:1 ratio,” said Usha in a statement.

Despite these efforts, Usha expresses her dissatisfaction with certain reports that continue to portray the IOA’s work in a negative light. Critics, she says, are turning a blind eye to the remarkable synergy achieved through unprecedented teamwork.

“Together with the sports ministry, and its units, the National Sports Federations and a good bunch of corporate partners, IOA had forged unprecedented teamwork. It is shocking that some have turned a blind eye to such synergy,” she added.

The Sports Ministry has approved a contingent of 117 athletes and 140 support staff members for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Notably, the number of support staff has tripled, including personal coaches, mental trainers, and physiotherapists. Their role is to provide comprehensive assistance to the athletes.

The IOA has formed a dedicated 13-member Sports Science team, led by renowned sports medicine expert Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. This team will accompany the Indian contingent, offering specialized support and expertise to enhance athletes’ performance and well-being throughout the event.
