In the last match of the regular season before the playoffs, Mumbai City FC made a daunting statement as they thrashed defending champions ATK Mohun Bagan by two goals at the GMC Stadium.

Mumbai hold on to their first-half lead as ATK fail to catch up

Mumbai City took an early lead just seven minutes into the game, as Ahmed Jahouh’s free-kick became the perfect opportunity for Mourtada, who beat ATK keeper Arindam Bhattacharya and headed the ball into the net.

The second goal came in a similar fashion. Hernan Santana’s free kick in the 39th minute struck the ATK crossbar, with an alert Bartholomew Ogbeche reaching to the ball first and using his head to put it into the net.

Just before half time, Mumbai earned another brilliant chance to push their lead to three goals, but Santana’s marvelous scorpion kick from Jahouh’s cross missed the goal by inches.

As the game progressed into the second half, both sides were earning close chances to score one, while ATK were the ones to receive two brilliant chances to get back into the game after the 70-minute mark. However, Roy Krishna being flagged off side, followed by Edu Garcia’s header missing the crossbar negated their chances.
