Kerala Blasters and Chennaiyin bit each other once to sweep up a point apiece in a 1-1 draw at the GMC Stadium.
Early strikes set the stage for the Kerala-Chennaiyin tie
Soon after kickoff, Chennaiyin set their attack in motion. Along with Lallianzuala Chhangte and Jakub Sylvestr making attempts to net in the opening goal of the game, their centre-back Enes Sipović headed in from a cross at the 3rd minute but was ruled out as offside.
However, within the first 10 minutes, Chennaiyin had their breakthrough, as Fatkhullo Fatkhuloev received a volley from Edwin Sydney Vanspaul, and the Tajik winger thundered it past Albino Gomes.
However, Chennaiyin’s lead was only short-lived as Kerala Blasters found themselves winning a penalty after the ball touched Deepak Tangri’s hand inside the box in the 28th minute. Gary Hooper wasted no time to make good use of the spot kick.
Throughout the rest of the game, both sides earned several chances to take the lead but failed to utilize them. Meanwhile, Sipović, who was booked early at the half an hour mark, received his second yellow of the game after bringing down Prasanth Karuthadathkuni with his leg at the 80th minute and marched back to the dressing room.
Despite Chennaiyin losing a center back and going down to 10 men, Kerala Blasters failed to capitalize and the final whistle was blown with both sides equalling their scores to a goal apiece.
