Chennaiyin FC, a prominent name in the Indian Super League (ISL), has announced the signing of defensive midfielder Jitendra Singh as part of the club’s roster for the 2024-25 season. The 22-year-old, hailing from Kolkata, has signed a two-year contract with the Marina Machans.
Jitendra Singh is not a new name in the world of football. He has made a name for himself as he was part of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He was also selected to play for the Indian Arrows and made his debut against Chennai City, even registering a goal a month later.
Before joining Chennaiyin FC, Singh had a stint with Jamshedpur FC. During his tenure with Jamshedpur FC, Singh made 66 appearances across all competitions, winning the ISL Shield once. However, his playing time had been limited since the departure of coach Owen Coyle, making just 14 starts over the next two seasons.
Chennaiyin FC’s deal with Jitendra Singh
The move to Chennaiyin FC offers Singh a promising opportunity for more consistent game time. He is set to reunite with head coach Owen Coyle, under whom he had a successful stint at Jamshedpur FC. Coyle expressed his delight at acquiring Singh and is confident that he will add significant value to the squad for the upcoming season.
Singh is renowned for his strong defensive capabilities and midfield versatility. He adds depth to the Chennaiyin squad, and his signing highlights Chennaiyin FC’s dedication to strengthening their squad with promising talent. Coyle stated, “We were looking to add some physicality in the midfield area and having worked with Jitendra, we believed he was perfect to play that role for us. He’s a hardworking and intelligent boy who will be admired by the team and fans alike.”

In addition to his role as a defensive midfielder, Singh can also play as a left and right-sided centre-back. He is physical and strong in winning duels, while also possessing a solid technical base in possession to keep the game flowing. Given Chennaiyin FC’s depth in that area, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Singh utilized as a centre-back as well.
The signing of Jitendra Singh is a strategic move by Chennaiyin FC. It not only strengthens their squad but also brings in a player familiar with Coyle’s tactics. As the club gears up for the 2024-25 season, fans look forward to seeing Singh in action and contributing to the team’s success.
