In a thrilling match in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season, Punjab FC secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Kerala Blasters FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday. The match, which seemed destined for a draw, was decided by a last-gasp goal from Croatian midfielder Filip Mrzljak, leaving the home fans in disbelief.
Punjab FC’s resilience in a thrilling encounter
The first half of the match was a tactical battle, with both teams focusing on maintaining possession and controlling the midfield. Kerala Blasters, under the new management of Mikael Stahre, looked to impose their style of play but found it difficult to break down a well-organized Punjab FC defence led by Panagiotis Dilmperis. The absence of star midfielder Adrian Luna, who was reportedly unwell, was felt as the Blasters struggled to create clear-cut chances.
The second half saw a more open game as both teams pushed for the opening goal. The introduction of Slovenian forward Luka Majcen in the 67th minute proved to be a masterstroke for Punjab FC. Majcen’s presence added a new dimension to Punjab’s attack, and it wasn’t long before he made a significant impact.
The match truly came to life in the final ten minutes. In the 86th minute, Punjab FC was awarded a penalty after Kerala Blasters’ defender Saheef brought down Leon Augustine inside the box. Majcen stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, giving Punjab FC a 1-0 lead.

Just when it seemed like Punjab FC would walk away with a narrow victory, Kerala Blasters found an equalizer in the second minute of injury time. Defender Pritam Kotal delivered a precise cross into the box, which was met by the head of new forward Jesus Jimenez, who nodded the ball past the Punjab goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
The Decisive Moment
With the match heading towards a draw, Punjab FC launched one final attack. Majcen, who had been instrumental throughout his time on the pitch, played a skilful pass to Filip Mrzljak on the right. The Croatian midfielder produced a sliding shot that found the back of the net, sealing a 2-1 victory for Punjab FC in the dying moments of the game.
