After having won by 2-1 in the recently-concluded Test series against Australia, Team India are ready to host England this month. While their key all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been out of action with an injured thumb, former pacer Irfan Pathan believed Kuldeep Yadav could help veteran Ravichandran Ashwin from the other end with his wrist spin.
“You don’t get left-arm wrist spinners everyday,” said Pathan to PTI, who backed Yadav and hoped that he will be added in the Indian Test squad against England. Kuldeep has been out of action for more than three months now but Pathan referred to him as a “unique bowler” who is likely to do well in the upcoming Test series, starting from February 5 in Chennai.
“It is very important from the team management point of view how they keep mind-set of a player, who is not playing. I am sure they must be doing a right job, and that’s why the guys, when we saw some of the youngsters, they came and played really well,” Pathan told. “I am sure they must be supporting and backing Kuldeep Yadav because he has got immense talent. You don’t find left-arm wrist spinners on every-day-basis.”
“He is a unique bowler. The guy is about 25-26 and this is where he is going to get maturity. Whenever he gets opportunity, first Test, second Test, whenever he will be raring to go and I am pretty sure that he will do well. When it comes to England, look at the history. If you are a leg-spinner, you always have a chance of performing well. I just hope that whenever he (Kuldeep) plays, he does really well,” further added Pathan.
Kuldeep Yadav has so far played six Tests where he has claimed 24 wickets. He last played in the longer format for India against Australia at Sydney way back in January 2019. While he was asked about the best combination of the campaign-opener, Pathan said that the host should field three spinners, keeping the nature of the Chennai pitch in mind as Chennai pitch helps the spinners with that extra bounce and the soil favours spin bowling as well.
