The former Indian Premier League(IPL) Champions SunRisers Hyderabad dropped a massive bombshell on Saturday morning. They confirmed that the legendary cricketer Brian Lara has been appointed as the Head Coach of the franchise for the upcoming 2023 season of the cash-rich tournament. The franchise has parted ways with Tom Moody, who was the head coach of the side in the last edition of the tournament, where they finished eighth in the points table.
Brian Lara has been given the new role
It is to be noted that Lara was also with SunRisers Hyderabad last season as a strategic advisor and batting coach.
“The cricketing legend Brian Lara will be our head coach for the upcoming #IPL seasons,” the official handle of SunRisers Hyderabad confirmed on Saturday.

Moody had a successful stint with the Sunrisers between 2013 and 2019 when the team reached the playoffs five times and emerged champions in 2016. In this year’s edition of the IPL, Sunrisers finished eighth with six wins and eight defeats.
Moody spoke to Cricbuzz confirming the parting of ways. He also wished the best to the franchise for the future endeavours. “It’s been a great journey and I wish them well.”
“As his term with us draws to an end, we would like to thank Tom for his contributions to SRH. It has been a much cherished journey over the years, and we wish him the very best for future endeavours,” SRH said in a statement released through their verified social media handle.
Moody’s contract with the franchise had expired ended earlier this year and was up for renewal. However, with lackluster display in the last couple of seasons, it was always expected that the parties would not continue their association.
Moody has been part of the SRH’s coaching crew since its inception in 2013, except for one year. The team won one IPL championship under him, in 2016, were runners-up in 2018 and had reached the play-offs on four more occasions. But the team’s performances in the 2021 and 2022 were disastrous, as they finished in the bottom three.
Moody is the only personnel to depart the franchise’s coaching staff, as all other coaches – Dale Steyn (fast bowling), Muttiah Muralitharan (spin bowling) and Hemang Badadni (fielding) – have retained their positions.
