IPL set to bring back 10-team format from 2022, new teams to be auctioned in May

The cash-rich Indian Premier League was only able to incorporate 10-teams into its mix once, back in 2011. The fourth edition featured Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India. The league has oscillated between the number of teams in the tournament with 8 as the standard number. After a lengthy wait, the IPL will finally have 10 teams competing for the title.

According to reports, several of the top BCCI officials including president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah have met to finalize the plans that have been laid out by the IPL Governing Council.

The plans point towards a potential auction in the month of May, where bidding for the two new franchises will take place.

“The 10 team IPL will roll on from next year and the bidding process and finalisation of the new franchises will be completed by the month of May this year,” a senior BCCI source told PTI under conditions of anonymity.

“Once the teams are finalised, they can start their operational work which takes considerable time,” he added\

The IPL were set to field out one additional franchise for the upcoming 2021 edition, but the plan was axed in favour of introducing two new franchises for the 2022 edition.

Change has been constant in multiple aspects when it comes to the Indian Premier League. Whether it be venues, teams or players.

After hosting the tournament in the UAE in 2020 due to the pandemic, the fiesta has returned back to its country of origin for the upcoming edition with a myriad of changes.

Following the mini-auction, it was announced that there are multiple venues in contention for hosting the event. As promised, the tournament will take place across six cities, with no franchise playing a home game.

The 10-team experiment lasted only one season the last time it was implemented, if this time around, it manages to stick, it promises to take another chunk of the calendar from International cricket.
