IPL 2022 Match 9 Review: RR secure second straight win as MI continue their slow start

39

The ninth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw five-time champions Mumbai Indians take on the Rajasthan Royals (RR). The Sanju Samson-led side secured their second straight win by 23 runs. Jos Buttler was adjudged as player of the match for his century.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. The side continued to compete in the absence of Suryakumar Yadav as a sample playing XI was announced.

An injury to Nathan Coulter-Nile meant a forced change for RR. The Sanju Samson-led team played with three overseas players as Navdeep Saini was roped in.

MI struck early through Jasprit Bumrah. The pacer picked his first wicket of IPL 2022 with a soft dismissal to remove Yashasvi Jaiswal for just one.

Jos Buttler scored 26 runs against Basil Thampi off the fourth over to set the tone of the innings. RR restored parity in the powerplay by picking the wicket of Devdutt Padikkal off the last ball of the sixth over.

Buttler raced to his fifty in 32 deliveries. The pair of the Englishman and the RR skipper put the pedal down in the middle overs to bring their 50-run stand in quick time.

Kieron Pollard broke the budding partnership with the wicket of the opposition skipper. Samson departed for a well-made 30 off 21 balls.

MI once again conceded 26 runs in an over during the innings. Pollard’s heavy final over meant that he conceded 46 runs off his quota of overs.

Hetmyer played his role to perfection, coming in the death overs. The Caribbean ace scored 35 off 14 deliveries to bolster the scoring rate even further.

Buttler registered the first hundred of IPL 2022. The English wicket-keeper batter scored his second hundred in the tournament in 66 deliveries.

While the bowling unit struggled to keep RR in control, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a gem of a spell, recording figures of 3-17 off his four overs.

MI pulled things back at the fag end of the innings by claiming 5 wickets and restricting RR to 193-8 in 20 overs.

Chasing 194, MI lost their skipper, Rohit Sharma, in the second over. Prasidh Krishna, following his heroics against SRH, once again struck in his first over to remove the dangerous Hitman.

Anmolpreet’s poor start to the campaign continued with yet another low score. The left-handed pair of Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma put on an important partnership for the third wicket, putting on 81 runs in 9 overs.

Tilak Varma scored his debut fifty and kept MI in the chase. R Ashwin got the better of the 19-year-old, who departed after a well-compiled 61 off 33 deliveries.

Chahal struck twice in the 16th over to send back Tim David and Daniel Sams.

MI fell short in the end by 23 runs to being their campaign with successive defeats.
