IPL 2024: What Happens If Qualifier 1 Gets Washed Out in Ahmedabad?

IPL 2024 Final

The much-anticipated IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is scheduled for Tuesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, what if rain plays spoilsport and the match gets washed out? Let’s explore the scenarios:

Qualifier 1: KKR holds the edge if Rain spoils the game

The venue saw rain washout during the Gujarat Titans’ last home game on May 13, which knocked GT out of the playoffs race and confirmed KKR’s top spot with 20 points from 14 matches. KKR has a psychological advantage, having won the IPL title in both 2012 and 2014 when they finished in the top two.

According to AccuWeather, there is no forecasted rain for Tuesday’s match. However, dew is expected to impact the second innings due to high humidity. The temperature is anticipated to range between 31 and 37 degrees Celsius, suggesting conditions may favour a high-scoring game.

Despite this, both teams will be wary of a washout, given that three of the last eight IPL matches were abandoned due to rain.

If the match is rained out, KKR will automatically advance to the final due to their higher points tally in the league stage, as per IPL rules. As per IPL Rule 13.7.3, an extra 120 minutes are allowed to complete a match if delayed or interrupted, which is double the usual allowance.

If the weather doesn’t permit play to resume within this extended time frame, the higher-ranked team (KKR) will progress directly to the final.

KKR has not played a match in the last 10 days due to back-to-back washouts. Despite this, they remain confident, buoyed by the return of mentor Gautam Gambhir and the consistent performance of their bowlers.

SRH will have to beat the winner of the Eliminator in the 2nd Qualifier to reach the final if Qualifier 1 gets washed out.

In summary, while the weather remains uncertain, cricket fans hope for an exciting and rain-free encounter between SRH and KKR in this crucial Qualifier 1 match at Ahmedabad.
