Wanindu Hasaranga, the Sri Lankan ace spinner, has been ruled out of the tournament due to chronic heel pain in his left foot. Hasaranga was set to play for SRH in the 2024 IPL after being bought by the 2016 champions for Rs 1.5 crore. However, his injury has led to a change in the team’s composition.
A big setback for SRH as Wanindu Hasaranga misses out
Hasaranga’s absence is a significant loss for SRH. He had a stellar 2022 season, taking 26 wickets with an economy of 7.54. In 2023, he played only eight games and took nine wickets with an economy of 8.9. His performance had made him a valuable player in the team. However, his health comes first, and it was decided that he would not participate in the IPL this year.
In light of Hasaranga’s injury, SRH has named another Sri Lankan spinner as his replacement. The young leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth has been roped in for the remainder of the IPL 2024. Viyaskanth, who has played one T20I for Sri Lanka, is a like-for-like replacement for Hasaranga. He has joined Sunrisers for a base price of Rs 50 lakh.
Viyaskanth is a rookie in the IPL, but his potential is undeniable. His inclusion in the team is expected to bring a fresh perspective and new energy. It will be interesting to see how he performs under pressure and how he fills the void left by Hasaranga.
