Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their thrilling nine-run victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This marks Pandya’s first over-rate penalty as the MI captain.
The match took place at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on April 18, 2024. Despite the pressure, MI successfully defended a total of 192 runs, registering their third win of the season. However, MI fell short by two overs, leading to the over-rate penalty.
Hardik Pandya imposed a fine for slow overrate
As per the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, this being the team’s first offence of the season, Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakh. The fine signifies the importance of maintaining the pace of play in the high-stakes environment of the IPL.

During the match, Pandya needed assistance from senior team members, including former captain Rohit Sharma and pace-bowling hero Jasprit Bumrah. After having PBKS reeling at 14 for 4, MI let slip the control of the proceedings as PBKS’s Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh kept the Kings in the hunt.
At one point, when Ashutosh was going all guns blazing, PBKS needed just 28 runs from 4 overs. However, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a terrific over to keep things quiet before Gerald Coetzee picked up the big wicket of Ashutosh Sharma and pegged PBKS back.
The slow-over rate also had an impact on the field as MI was allowed to have only four fielders, instead of five, outside the ring in the last two overs. Despite this, Akash Madhwal kept his composure in the final over when PBKS needed 13 runs and sealed the deal for MI.
Despite the over-rate penalty, Pandya expressed relief at the end of the thriller, acknowledging that everyone’s nerves got tested and that IPL tends to show that the opposition can come back.
