In the world of cricket, records are made to be broken and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season witnessed a remarkable feat when Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) opening batter, Abhishek Sharma, shattered an eight-year-old record held by the legendary Virat Kohli.
Abhishek Sharma’s dream run continues in IPL 2024
Abhishek Sharma, a 23-year-old cricketer from Punjab, has been in scintillating form this season. During the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), he played a blistering knock of 66 runs off just 28 balls. His innings was studded with five fours and six sixes, showcasing his aggressive batting style and ability to score quickly.
The highlight of the match, however, was when Sharma hit a maximum against Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the second innings. This six was not just another addition to his tally but a record-breaking one. With this hit, Sharma registered his 39th six of the ongoing season, surpassing Virat Kohli’s record of 38 sixes in a single IPL season set in 2016.
This achievement is significant as it underlines Sharma’s explosive batting prowess and his ability to clear the boundary with ease. His record-breaking feat has earned him the title of the new “Six King” of IPL.
Sharma’s performance has been instrumental in SRH’s success this season. His aggressive batting at the top of the order has provided the team with quick starts, putting the opposition bowlers under pressure from the outset. His partnership with Travis Head has been particularly destructive, with the duo thrashing the bowling attacks of their opponents.

In addition to his record-breaking number of sixes, Sharma has also surpassed his best-ever runs tally in a season of 426 achieved in the 2022 edition. He has now scored 467 runs from 13 innings at an average of 38.91 and a sensational strike rate of 209.41. Along with his 41 sixes, Sharma has also scored 35 fours and notched up three half-centuries in the season.
While Sharma basks in the glory of his new record, Virat Kohli is not far behind. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) opener has smashed 37 sixes in the ongoing season from 14 matches. As RCB prepares for the Eliminator game, Kohli will be raring to go and reclaim his feat.
