The 40th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 took place between the Gujarat Titans and the Sunrisers Hyderabad  (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium. The Hardik Pandya-led side secured another last gasp victory to move to the top of the table.

Hardik Pandya ended Kane Williamson’s streak of eight toss wins in a row. The GT skipper elected to bowl first on a fresh surface at the venue. While the new franchise played with the same playing XI, SRH announced the return of Washington Sundar in place of Jagadeesha Suchith.

SRH openers Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma led the team to a decent start. Mohammad Shami, however, continued his dominant record over the SRH skipper by breaching his defence to bowl him out.

Rahul Tripathi unleashed a barrage of boundaries against Shami in the penultimate over of the powerplay. However, the veteran pacer had the last laugh after trapping the batter LBW.

Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram shared a 96-run partnership for the third wicket. The fluid partnership saw Sharma take on Rashid Khan with three sixers over the course of his spell. On the other hand, the Proteas batter focused on the pacers.

The left-handed all-rounder registered the third IPL fifty of the season, before being dismissed by Alzarri Joseph for 64. Shashank Singh played a price less cameo and struck three sixes off the last three deliveries to send SRH to 195-6.

Chasing the mammoth total, Gill and Saha got the team off to a stellar start. Ensuring that they do not lose a wicket, the duo put up 59 in the first six overs.

Umran Malik single-handedly dismantled the entire GT top-order with a vital spell. The speedster accounted for the wickets of both the openers and the opposition skipper.

However, the right-arm pacer did not stop there, he proceeded to castle David Miller and Abhinav Manohar with sheer pace to bag a five-wicket haul. He finished with figures of 5-25 as the GT lower-middle order were left with an uphill task.

The pair of Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia were the rescuers once again for GT. Much like their win over CSK, the duo showcased a barrage of brute hitting in the death overs and snatched a win from the jaws of defeat.

GT struck four sixes in the final over much like their opposition to win the contest and move to the top of the table.
