The Indian Premier League(IPL) 2022 edition had seen its first COVID-19 case when Delhi Capitals(DC) physio Patrick Farhart tested positive. Now, it has been noted that at least two more fresh cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Delhi Capitals’ contingent. It has been further reported that it includes an overseas player. It is understood that the other positive case concerns a support staff member.
Delhi Capitals are the first to record COVID positive in IPL 2022
Delhi Capitals have so far played 5 matches, winning two and losing three. They are currently 8th on the points table above defending champions Chennai Super Kings and 5-time champions Mumbai Indians. Delhi Capitals next take on Punjab Kings on Wednesday at the MCA stadium in Pune.
IPL 2022 kickstarted with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on the last year’s runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on March 26th.
The matches are being played across stadiums in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai & Pune with an audience occupancy rate of 25% as per COVID-19 protocols. 20 matches each are being held at Wankhede Stadium & DY Patil Stadium, 15 matches each at Brabourne and MCA International Stadium, Pune.
Last year the league was marred by COVID-19. It was played behind closes doors across a few venues in India but was suspended mid-way in May after multiple COVID-19 cases were reported in its bio-bubble. As many as 29 league matches following a spike in positive cases in the bio-bubble was suspended.
Varun Chakravarthy, Sandeep Warrier, Wridhimman Saha and Amit Mishra had tested positive in 2021 – after the cases among players and support staff causes serious concerns. The remaining matches were then played in the UAE in September-October. The 2020 edition of the league was also played in the UAE.
