Tilak Varma played a fighting knock in the first innings and top-scored in MI’s total of 155-7. The five-time champions overcame a shaky start to turn things around in the last 10 overs.
The 19-year-old registered his second fifty of IPL 2022 and broke into the top 5 of the Orange Cap list. He remained unbeaten till the end with 51 to his name off 43 deliveries.
Terming that the ball gripped on the surface at the DY Patil Stadium, Varma said during the mid-innings break:
“It was very important to play a few overs initially because it was gripping and seaming initially. A dry wicket usually holds a bit but it played different. It was gripping a bit and Mukesh bowled really well.”
Speaking about MI’s strategy after losing three wickets in the powerplay and struggling at 47-4 at one stage, the youngster added:
“Our plan was to play the whole 20 overs. That was the plan and I think 156 is a good score. If we bowl well we can defend it. 145-150 we thought is a good score on this wicket. The dew came in a bit. If we bowl well we can defend this total.”
MI were aided by CSK’s lapses in the field. The Ravindra Jadeja-led side dropped several catches on the field.
The Rohit Sharma-led side are off to a stellar start, they dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad off the very first ball of the innings.
