Wankhede was the focal point yet again as Punjab Kings (PBKS) took on Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

IPL 2021 Match 8 Review

CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first. Both sides remained unchanged from their previous matches.

The Yellow Army had a gem of a powerplay after decimating the dangerous PBKS top-order batsmen. Deepak Chahar (4-13), who was given four overs on the trot, was responsible for the havoc combined with some exceptional fielding from Ravindra Jadeja (0-19).

Mayank Agarwal (0) was undone by a beautiful outswinger, while KL Rahul (5) found himself short of the crease on the bank of a bullet direct-hit by Jadeja.

Chris Gayle’s (10) stay was cut short after misreading a knuckleball. Chahar also got rid of Deepak Hooda (10) and Nicholas Pooran (0) in his exceptional spell.

Stuck in trouble with the scoreboard reading 26-5, Shahrukh Khan (47) played a rescue inning to push PBKS to the three-figure mark. Tidy death bowling by Dwayne Bravo (1-10) and Sam Curran (1-16) restricted the opposition to 106-8.

With the current IPL record of the lowest score being defended standing at 116, PBKS were in need of a record-breaking effort to walk away with the points.

PBKS bowled tightly in the powerplay which resulted in the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) in the fifth over. The young opener struggled to get going after failing to time the ball and he was duly picked out by Arshdeep Singh (1-7).

Moeen Ali (47) and Faf Du Plessis (36) settled in with ease by taking their time. Ali was able to find the boundary rope on a regular basis to take them closer to the meagre target set in place.

CSK escalated their scoring after the 10th over in a bid to boost their Net Run Rate. Ali could not take the team to the finish line following his dismissal. His slog sweep of Murugan Ashwin (1-32) found the man at deep midwicket to perfection.

Suresh Raina, who scored 87 off 25 the last time these two sides met at the Wankhede, began his innings on a bright note with a boundary straight down the ground.

The proceedings unexpectedly turned out to be chaotic in the end. Raina (8) fell prey to the short ball once again while Ambati Rayudu (0) was out on the very first delivery itself leaving Shami on a hattrick with only 8 runs to win.

The side were able to close it out to mark MS Dhoni’s 200th game in Yellow with a win.

Brief Scorecard

PBKS 106-8 (20 overs) (Shahrukh Khan 47; D.Chahar 4-13)

CSK 107-4 (15.4 overs) (M.Ali 46; M.Shami 2-21)
