The showdown between two young Indian captains lit up the Wankhede as RR took on DC in the seventh game of the tournament.

IPL Match 7 Review

Sanju Samson won the toss for RR and elected to bowl first on a pitch with a greenish tinge to it. Ben Stokes, who has been ruled out, was replaced with David Miller. The second change involved the introduction of Jaydev Unadkat in place of Shreyas Gopal.

DC handed a debut to all-rounder Lalit Yadav while Kagiso Rabada also returned in place of Amit Mishra and Shimron Hetmyer.

Royals execute their plans in the powerplay to perfection and reduced DC to 36-3. Jaydev Unadkat (3-15), in a three-over burst, removed Prithvi Shaw (2), Shikhar Dhawan (9) and Ajinkya Rahane (8) in quick succession.

The fielding was on point as well with Sanju Samson grabbing a diving catch behind the stumps to send Dhawan back.

Deep in peril, things took a turn for the worse as Marcus Stoinis (0) was dismissed in no time. The slower deliveries and cutters gripped the surface making it a shadow of a pitch than the other pitches at the Wankhede.

Royals continued their barrage of slower deliveries, but Rishabh Pant (51) took initiative and scored a tremendous fifty under pressure. Riyan Parag’s (0-16) impeccable direct hit ended the skipper’s fighting knock.

Cameos from the lower order resisted Chetan Sakariya (0-33) and Muztafizur Rahman’s (2-29) spells in the death to crawl to 147-8 after 20 overs. DC failed to hit a single six in their innings.

DC had an even better powerplay with the ball which proved the 148 run target to be trickier than it looked. Manan Vohra (9), who looked solid after a couple of boundaries, perished the very next ball to a rash shot.

Jos Buttler (2), back to his opening spot, had a forgettable outing with Woakes (2-22) claiming his second wicket of the innings.

Kagiso Rabada (2-30) opened his account following his return with the prized wicket of Sanju Samson (4) to leave RR reeling at 26-3 after the powerplay.

Wickets kept tumbling as Avesh Khan entered the attack again after the powerplay. Shivam Dube (2) and Riyan Parag (2) had a short stint at the crease, leaving RR at 42-5.

David Miller (62) played a fighting innings and brought up a well-deserved half-century, which included the first sixes of the fixture. As he looked to up the ante, he found his end after a simple catch at long-on.

Chris Morris (36) slammed 2 sixes off the penultimate over bowled by Rabada to leave the equation to 12 off the final over.

The South African, who did not have an opportunity to finish the game against Punjab Kings reduced the equation to 4 off 4. He finished the game off with a six to give RR a three-wicket win.

Brief Scorecard

DC 147-8 (20 overs ) (R.Pant 51; J.Unadkat 3-15)

RR 150-7 (19.4 overs) (D.Miller 62; A.Khan 3-32)
