IPL 2021 Match 6 Review: SRH falls to the Chepauk choke curse against RCB

The waning nature of the ruthless Chepauk track was the focal point of the IPL South derby between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH).

IPL 2021 Match 6 Review: SRH vs RCB

David Warner chose to bowl on a dry and patchy pitch and introduced two changes to the side that faced defeat against KKR at the same venue. Sandeep Sharma’s impeccable record against Virat Kohli was not enough to keep him in the side as he was replaced with left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem. The other change for SRH was Jason Holder in place of Mohammad Nabi.

Devdutt Padikkal was back into the playing eleven for RCB after missing out on the previous match.

SRH struck early in the powerplay as Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up the wicket of Padikkal in the third over of the innings. Shahbaz Ahmed was promoted up the order but this stint ended the very first ball after the powerplay.

Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell shared a tidy stand for the third wicket and escalated the run rate in the first half of the middle overs. RCB endured a massive slump prior to the death overs from being 91-2 to 109-6 in the space of 4 overs.

However, a settled Maxwell notched his first IPL fifty in five years and propelled RCB to a competitive total of 149.

Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers for SRH with figures of 2-18. Jason Holder also played a pivotal role with a three-wicket haul that included the wicket of Kohli. Moreover, the side were also impressive in the field with their catching, in particular, something that they lacked in their first game.

The chase began on a rough note for the chasing side after Saha went back into the pavilion in the third over itself. Mohammad Siraj bowled a tight first spell.

David Warner and Manish Pandey played with conviction in the tricky surface to notch 50 runs in the powerplay.

Pandey played the role of the anchor while Warner trudged his way to his 49th ODI fifty in IPL. The skipper perished after trying to match the climbing required rate. Their stand ended when the score read 96-1 in the 14th over. RCB used the opportunity to contain the chasing unit with the use of spinners.

With the asking rate almost touching double digits, The ploy moved as Bairstow struggled to deal with the pace off the ball and the turn by Shahbaz Ahmed, leading to his dismissal. Manish Pandey’s run-a-ball vigil ended the very next ball with an attempt to slog. The left-arm off-spinner culminated the over with the wicket of pinch-hitter Abdul Samad to tilt the game in the favour of RCB.

While SRH managed to secure a boundary after a 4-over gap, they still needed 16 runs to make in the final over for the points. Despite Rashid Khan’s sharp cameo, extras and a boundary, RCB capped off the evening with a six-run win.
