IPL 2021 Match 28 Review: Buttler scores stellar ton for RR as Williamson’s reign starts with defeat

36

IPL reached exactly the halfway mark with Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the two sides reeling at the bottom of the table, tussling it out in Delhi.

Toss and Team News

The shift in captaincy was the talk of the town and the team announced another bombshell by dropping Warner altogether from the playing eleven.

Newly-appointed captain Kane Williamson opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Mohammad Nabi, Abdul Samad, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned back into the team in place of David Warner, Jagadeesha Suchith, and Siddharth Kaul.

Rajasthan Royals also announced a couple of changes in the form of a debutant Anuj Rawat and Kartik Tyagi in place of Jaydev Unadkat and Shivam Dube.

Buttler ton commands RR over a 200-run total

SRH brought in Rashid Khan to bowl in the powerplay itself. Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed a great deal of aggression to score boundaries off the leg-spinner. The youngster, however, went for a shot too many and lost his wicket to Rashid, after surviving a DRS call earlier in the over.

The lost review made an impact straight away as Jos Buttler got away with a poor decision from the umpire.

RR continued to exercise caution with Rashid Khan, who was unlucky not to get the wicket of Samson after Manish Pandey dropped a sitter at long-off.

Williamson used Rashid Khan’s four overs by the 11th over as the deadly duo kept their partnership intact and building.

SRH struggled to pick up a wicket and conceded 109 off the last seven overs as Jos Buttler registered his maiden IPL hundred and the highest score by a RR batsman ever.

Barring Rashid, no bowler was able to stake a claim in the innings which ended with RR scoring 220-3

SRH stumble in the chase

Manish Pandey was promoted to the top of the order alongside Jonny Bairstow. The brisk start was soon brought to a halt after Muztafizur got the prized wicket.

Their sole hope to scale a target of this magnitude was Jonny Bairstow. The Englishman began the innings with great promise, but the cameo ended as Rahul Tewatia ended a long wait for his second wicket of the tournament.

Skipper Kane Williamson could not contribute much and the fragile middle-order crumbled under the pressure of the steep run rate.

The wickets kept tumbling and SRH began life under their new skipper with a hefty 55-run defeat.
