A potential headstart in the battle for the fourth spot awaited Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad as they clashed at the Dubai International Stadium. In a low scoring encounter, KXIP managed to edge out SRH by 12 runs to ensure their winning streak in the second half of the tournament lives on.
Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, SRH were high on confidence after executing their first-ever chase in this edition against RR. David Warner brought back Khaleel Ahmed in place of Shahbaz Nadeem while KXIP announced two changes as well. In form opener, Mayank Agarwal and James Neesham did not make the cut as Mandeep Singh and Chris Jordan filled the spots.
KL Rahul and Mandeep Singh shared an opening stand of 37 runs in 5 overs. While Mandeep Singh and next batsman Chris Gayle holed out in the deep, KL Rahul was undone by a deceiving googly from Rashid Khan. Much like the earlier fixture between these two teams, the leg-spinner was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-14 in his 4 overs.
KXIP endured a dry spell which did not see a boundary for over 10 overs, Nicholas Pooran stayed till the end for an unbeaten 32 as the side managed to pose a 127 run target for SRH to chase.
KXIP snatch win from the jaws of defeat
David Warner led the chase with an explosive 20-ball 35 run innings which aided SRH in bringing up the 50-run mark in just 5 overs.
While both the openers were dismissed in quick succession, the game was very much tilted towards SRH’s favour who had to chase the target with a required rate under 6 and plenty of wickets in hand.
Abdul Samad was promoted to number 4 and could only score 5 runs. KXIP clawed their ways back into the contest as the partnership between Manish Pandey and Vijay Shankar slowed things down for the chasing side.
The duo, who took SRH home last time around could only muster 33 runs off 44 balls. The death overs led by Arshdeep Singh and Chris Jorda saw an exhibition of cutters which brought forward 7 wickets in 14 runs to hand KXIP a slender win in the end.
