The second half of the tournament kicked off with the matchup between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings. Facing each other at the same venue they had played in their first match, CSK turned out to be the winners after defending their 168 run target.

MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat, which meant that CSK would bat first for the first time since their qualifier clash against Mumbai Indians in 2019. Newcomer N Jagadeesan sat out to accommodate the returning Piyush Chawla in the playing eleven.SRH included Shahbaz Nadeem in place of all-rounder Abhishek Sharma.

In search for a good start that the team have lacked in the first half of the tournament, CSK sent in Sam Curran to open the batting alongside Faf du Plessis. While the Orange Cap contender got out for a first-ball duck, Curran’s hitting exploits were fully on display in his knock of 31 off 21 deliveries.

Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu steadied things post the powerplay and were able to successfully negotiate Rashid Khan, who ended wicketless in his 4-over spell. While both the batsmen lost their wickets in the early forties, they set a good enough platform for MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to finish the innings with a flourish.

The experienced finishers chipped in with a combined 46 runs off 23 balls to set SRH a target of 168.

CSK defend the target with ease

SRH’s reliance on their top order came into the picture as CSK were successful in nabbing early wickets. David Warner was a victim to a rather unfortunate dismissal while Manish Pandey was caught short after Dwayne Bravo hit the stumps from close range.

Deepak Chahar bowled a single spell of four overs with MS Dhoni opting to keep the spinners for later on the innings. Ravindra Jadeja set Jonny Bairstow up with a tight line that eventually resulted in his dismissal.

Priyam Garg struggled for his 18-ball 16 run knock while Kane Williamson stuck around for a half-century. The imploding required rate forced the SRH batsman to go for the big shots which brought CSK wickets at regular intervals.

Karn Sharma’s final over brought the prized wicket of the well-settled Williamson but went for 19 runs thanks to Rashid Khan’s exploits. Despite that scare, Shardul Thakur was able to pull things through with a tight penultimate over that only brought 5 runs. Dwayne Bravo followed it up with a brilliant final over by only giving away 1 run.

SRH’s disappointing chase was highlighted with the lack of boundaries with the side only able to hit 2 sixes in their entire innings.

Brief Scorecard:

CSK 167-5 (20 overs) (S.Watson 42; S.Sharma 2-19)

SRH 147-8 (20 overs) (K.Williamson 57; D.Bravo 2-25)
