MI overcame a resilient Sunrisers side to take away the two points. The game went into a super over after the scores were level.
In a rare instance, MI skipper Rohit Sharma elected to bat first after winning the toss and named an unchanged XI. SRH on the other hand, were without their prolific openers Warner and Bairstow for the first time this season.
The three-time IPL champions struggled on a surface where the ball stopped coming on to the bat. Barring Quinton de Kock, no batsman got quite settled in. The South African wicketkeeper notched his 4th half century in the process. The death overs ended up in the favour of the orange army with MI posting 162 on the board.
Despite a superb start in the powerplay, the vulnerable SRH middle order faltered yet again to bring the hosts back into the contest. However, the in-form Manish Pandey and Mohammad Nabi joined forces to overcome the Mumbai bowling attack.
With 17 needed off the last over and 7 required off the final delivery, Manish Pandey kept his cool and took the contest to super over.
The super over began on a dreadful note for the visitors as Pandey was run out on the very first delivery itself. Nabi instilled hope with a mammoth six off Bumrah but faded away quickly to bring the equation down to 9 off 6 for MI.
Hardik Pandya’s purple patch with the bat was evident as he dispatched the very first delivery off Rashid Khan for a maximum. From there it was a walk in the park for the men in blue.
Brief Scorecard
MI 162-5 (Q.de.Kock 69*; K.Ahmed 3-42)
SRH 162-6 (M.Pandey 71*; K.Pandya 2-22)
